- June 6th: On June 6th, 1912, an enormous eruption occurred on the remote Alaskan Peninsula. ("Novarupta"). As the location was so remote, the eruption was not noticed at first, but with a expansive ash cloud that stretched into the northern United States, people soon took notice (King). At first scientists thought the eruption was caused by the near-by volcano, Katmai, but it was forty years later that it was discovered that the eruption had actually formed a new volcano, Novarupta (King). The Novarupta eruption went down as biggest eruption of the 20th century and caused more in-depth research towards the volcanoes decorating the Alaskan Peninsula (King).
