Birth of Jackson Pollock

- January 28th: In late January 1912, Jackson Pollock was born to farmers in remote Wyoming ("Jackson Pollock"). As a young adult Pollock showed great interest in painting and moved to New York City, finding work creating art for the federal government ("Jackson Pollock"). It wasn't until Peggy Guggenheim discovered and started selling Pollock's works that the budding artist started to gain recognition ("Jackson Pollock"). During this time Pollock created some of his most creative works and started developing his own abstract painting style of dripping paint on a canvas ("Jackson Pollock"). Some praised his movement into a more unlimited modern-art, but many more criticized his work ("Jackson Pollock"). Pollock had trouble there after in selling his paintings and turned to alcohol ("Jackson Pollock"). Nonetheless, Jackson Pollock remains one of the most important artists of the twentieth century and his paintings are now treasured artworks ("Jackson Pollock").
Modern Art is introduced to collages

- 1912: While collages have been around since the cavemen era, the technique was finally introduced into modern art in 1912 (Stern). It was in this year that Pablo Picasso stuck a piece of oil cloth onto an oval painting "Still Life with Chair Caning" and the technique caught on (Stern). Many famous artists took on collages and several art movements of the day, such as Cubism, incorporated collages into their works (Stern). Collages still remain an extremely important technique in art today and its introduction in modern art was one that defined art in the early 1900s (Stern).

Death of John Ford Paterson

- July 1st: In early July, artist John Ford Paterson died at in Carlton, Australia (Tipping). Paterson was born and grew up in the Scottish Highlands and dipped into his artistic skills in his early twenties (Tipping). He continued to display his works and grew a reputation in London as a landscape painter (Tipping). However, it wasn't until Paterson moved to Australia in 1884 and had several breakout pieces that his popularity grew (Tipping). Paterson continued to paint into his old age and even became a poultry farmer (Tipping). Despite the fact that Paterson never received the fame that many other twentieth century artists did, Paterson's works have gone down as brilliant representations of natures beauty and are treasured by those who posse them (Tipping).
